Metal Slug is the original 1996 Neo Geo run-and-gun game, subtitled Super Vehicle-001. Play it free in your browser, move through enemy positions, rescue prisoners and use the small SV-001 tank. This page loads the first arcade game rather than Metal Slug X or a PlayStation port.
Select Play now and allow the external player when prompted, then choose PLAY NOW inside the game area. After the Neo Geo boot sequence, click the game and press Right Shift to insert a virtual coin. Press Enter to start player 1; the how-to-play sequence leads into Mission 1. Use arrows to move, X to shoot, Z to jump and S for a grenade.
Wait until the player status and mission timer appear. A scene with the Metal Slug logo and INSERT COIN is an automatic demonstration. The default coin key is the right-hand Shift; left Shift will not work. Click inside the picture again if the browser keeps scrolling instead of moving your soldier.
Your starting handgun has unlimited shots, but special weapons such as the Heavy Machine Gun have an ammunition counter. Read the remaining supply before holding fire through an empty area. Stand or crouch to control your firing height; shoot upward when threats occupy platforms above you.
Shoot the ropes or restraints to free prisoners, then move close enough to collect the items they offer. Clearing nearby enemies first makes the rescue safer. Prisoner rewards can change your weapon or supplies; rushing past them loses a useful opportunity to restock.
Grenades have a separate limited counter. They are useful against clustered enemies, armor and bosses, especially when ordinary bullets take too long. Spend them on a clear target instead of throwing several while the enemy is temporarily unreachable.
The SV-001 gives you vehicle firepower and an armor meter, but it is not invincible. Watch both incoming attacks and the vehicle condition. Learning when to protect the tank is more useful than assuming it guarantees a safe run through the entire mission.
Advance in short steps and check the space ahead after enemies appear. Constant forward movement can put you between a ground attacker and an elevated gun. Remove the nearest immediate threat, then move into the opening rather than jumping into an unseen projectile.
Use the opening area to practice moving while firing and making a short jump. Keep an eye on the time as well as enemy fire. A few deliberate grenade throws against a boss can be more valuable than finishing with unused supplies after losing all your lives.
Player 1 defaults from the embedded player's Controls Settings. Right Shift means the Shift key on the right of the keyboard. Click inside the game before pressing keys; remapped keys take precedence.
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| Right Shift | Insert coin |
| Enter | Start player 1 |
| Arrow keys | Move / aim up / crouch |

Desktop Chrome on macOS was used to check startup and keyboard input on October 27, 2026. The game runs in an external RetroGames.cc player. No app or browser plugin installation is required; game and emulator resources still download after you start.
Android phones and iPhone/iPad have not been tested on physical devices. Touch controls, simultaneous button presses, sound and fullscreen behavior are unverified. Use a desktop keyboard for the verified setup; a smaller screen alone does not establish phone compatibility.
A page favorite only bookmarks the game. Automatic progress recovery and the provider's save-state or online-play features have not been verified. Reloading can lose the current session. For missing sound, interact with the game and check its speaker control; for ignored keys, click the game again.
